Health Insurance for Work Permit Holders

A work permit can get you a provincial health card, but not automatically and not always on day one. It depends on the province, the length of the permit and the job. Here's how it works in Ontario, BC and Alberta, and what to do until you're covered.

Quick answer

Work permit holders can get provincial health coverage if they meet the province's rules. In Ontario, you need a valid work permit and a full-time job with an Ontario employer for at least six months, and coverage has no waiting period. In BC, a work permit valid for six months or more usually qualifies after MSP's wait of up to three months. In Alberta, the permit must have at least six months left and you must intend to live there for 12 months. Until then, a private plan covers emergencies; six months of $100,000 cover for a 30-year-old started at $446.40 on our October 29, 2026 quotes.

2026 rules

Work Permit Health Coverage by Province

Ontario

OHIP

A valid work permit and a full-time job (30+ hours a week) with an Ontario employer for at least six months, with an employer letter to prove it. Ontario must be your main home and you must be here 153 days in any 12 months. No waiting period. Your spouse and children may qualify too. Expired permit but on maintained status? You may still be eligible.

British Columbia

MSP

Work permits valid for six months or more usually qualify. Coverage starts after the rest of your arrival month plus two months. MSP is mandatory for eligible residents, so apply as soon as you have a BC address.

Alberta

AHCIP

The permit must name an Alberta employer and location, or be an open permit, with at least six months left. You must establish residency and intend to stay 12 months. Apply within three months of arriving and coverage can start from the date you settled.

Already working? Check whether your employer has a group benefits plan. Group plans usually cover drugs, dental and paramedical care, but most don't replace the provincial plan for hospital and doctor bills, so you may still need emergency cover until your health card starts.

    Spouse on an open permit?

In Ontario, a spouse can often qualify through your eligibility. If not, quote them a separate plan.

    Common questions

Work Permit Health Coverage: Your Questions

Do work permit holders get OHIP?

Yes, if they have a valid work permit and a full-time job with an Ontario employer for at least six months, make Ontario their main home and meet the presence rules. There's no waiting period.

Is there a waiting period for work permit holders in BC?

Yes. MSP coverage starts after the rest of the month you arrive plus two months. Buy private cover for that gap.

Can I get Alberta health care on a work permit?

Yes, if the permit names an Alberta employer or is open, has at least six months left, and you intend to live in Alberta for 12 months.

Does a PGWP qualify for OHIP?

An open work permit like a PGWP can qualify once you have a full-time job with an Ontario employer for at least six months. Until then, you need private cover.

Is my spouse covered if I get OHIP?

Often yes. Ontario says your spouse and dependants may also qualify if you're eligible on a work permit. Contact ServiceOntario for your case.

Does my employer's health plan replace provincial coverage?

Usually not. Most group plans top up provincial coverage with drugs, dental and therapies. Hospital and doctor bills are expected to go to the province first.
