Quick answer
Most visitors to Canada and Super Visa plans cover short side trips to the United States, as long as each trip starts and ends in Canada, stays within the plan's limits and doesn't go to the visitor's home country. Typical limits are 30 days per side trip and less than half of the total policy period for all side trips combined. Cover on a side trip is still emergency-only, and US hospital costs are far higher than in Canada.
The Side-Trip Rules on Visitor Plans
A visitor plan is built for your time in Canada. Side-trip cover is an extra, and every insurer writes its own limits. These are the ones we see most:
- Starts and ends in Canada. Fly from Toronto to New York and back: covered. Fly home to India through New York: that's not a side trip.
- Not the home country. A trip back home isn't covered. Some plans pause the policy and restart it when your parent comes back (a "trip break"), with no refund for the days away.
- A limit per trip. Often 30 days. Past that, cover can stop until your parent returns to Canada.
- A limit overall. All side trips together must be less than about half of the policy period. Manulife's basic plan, for example, allows up to 49% of covered days with a maximum of 30 days. On one Blue Cross plan, going past the total limit can void the whole contract.

An emergency in the US can cost several times what it costs in Canada. Your parent's $100,000 limit covers the US too, so a higher limit is worth a look if a long US trip is planned.
The same side-trip rules usually apply. The US visa is separate: a Canadian Super Visa doesn't let your parent enter the US.

Side Trips to the USA: Your Questions
Does visitor insurance cover a trip to the USA?
Most plans do, as long as the trip starts and ends in Canada and stays within the plan's side-trip limits. Check the wording before you go.
How long can a side trip be?
Often up to 30 days per trip, and all side trips together must be less than about half of the policy period. Limits vary by insurer.
Does Super Visa insurance cover travel to the USA?
Usually, with the same side-trip limits. Your parent also needs their own US visa or entry permission.
Is a trip back to the home country covered?
No. Many plans pause the cover while your parent is home and restart it on return, with no refund for those days.
Should I buy separate US travel insurance?
Only if the trip is longer than your plan allows or you want a higher limit for the US. For short trips, the visitor plan's side-trip cover is usually enough.
What should my parents carry on a US trip?
The policy wallet card or certificate, the insurer's emergency phone number, and a list of their medicines. Call the assistance line before getting treatment.
